How to open a CT or MRI CD on any computer

Hospitals give scans on a CD or DVD in DICOM format. The viewer on the disc often runs only on Windows, needs to be installed, or does not start at all. You can open the disc in your browser instead.

Steps

  1. Put the disc in the drive (or copy its folder to your computer, or use the zip file you were sent).
  2. Open viewer.plexusmd.org in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox.
  3. Choose Open study and pick the disc's folder, or drag the folder or zip onto the page.
  4. The series appear on the left. Click one to view it; scroll through slices with the mouse wheel.

Is it safe?

The images are read and shown on your own computer. Nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed.

What you can do

Scroll, zoom and adjust the window; measure lengths, angles and areas; see three planes at once (MPR); compare two studies side by side; save a picture; and save an anonymised copy of the study.

The disc does not open

Choose the top folder of the disc (the one with DICOMDIR or a DICOM folder in it). If the disc is damaged, copy what you can to your computer first and open that folder.
